Anchors not working
|
|
| John at NF 2005-02-03, 6:21 pm |
| Dreamweaver 4...Following the instructions in the manual I created a named
anchor on a gif image then linked this to a text on a different page (same
folder). When I preview in I.E Browser the text link always goes to the top of
the correct page, not to the anchor link about half way down and out of site.
I've tried creating anchor links using both methods, i.e Insert>invisible
tags>Named Anchor, and the 'point to file ' method, with the same result. The
following code is what appears in the Property Inspector link window , the
#free is correctly the named anchor to be linked to, and the code corresponds
correctly to the 'sample' in the Dreamweaver manual.
aromatherapy.htm#free.......'Aromatherapy' being the correct page the 'free'
image link is on. I need to sort this because there will be a whole lot of
text links from a page to various sections throughout the entire site. I have
searched on the Forum, but nothing came up with the same symptoms as I'm
getting (or that I could understand) ! Any guidance appreciated, Regards to
all...JE

| I have never had a problem with named anchors. The only thing I can think of
what you're doing wrong is from your description of how you went about creating
a link. Try this, click on your image or next to it, and insert your anchor.
Then highlight your text. The way I do it is to open both document windows at
the same time, you will probably have to minimise them slightly. You will then
have the document with your photo on and the document with your highlight text
on. With the text highlighted, go to your property inspector and next to the
link box, you will see a point to file circle. Click and hold on their own
drag to your anchor that is next to your photo or whatever your anchor is next
to. Try that and see what happens

I am not sure I am getting this.
[color=darkred]
so you should have an image with a link <a
href="aromatherapy.htm#free">Free</a> being a link to the anchor.
but you then say[color=darkred]
So what is the name of the file with the anchor on? It should be
aromatherapy.htm but you say the image link is on this file.

| Thanks PRWooding. I did exactly the same as your method ! Thanks Terry... Ok,
this is the code fixed to a text word called 'Sandalwood' in a htm page. <a
href='shop_aromatherapy.htm#sand'>Sandalwood</a> This is the code fixed to the
anchor symbol on the shop_aromatherapy.htm page. <a name='sand'></a> When
clicking on the text word 'Sandlewood', the top of the page the anchor resides
in appears, not at the location of the anchor. Is this any clearer ? Just a
thought....the anchors are a gif image in table cell, do they work inside a
table cell ? The manual say's shouldn't be in a layer, but doesn't mention
tables. Regards JE

| Thanks Terry... I have finally got the anchor links working ! Remembering that
I'm using tables, there are no layers. I found that when I placed the named
anchors at the end oa text blocks on the page, all the anchors work..!!! So I
assume named anchors don't like sharing a cell with an image. I've a feeling
there's something I don't know, but the important thing is they work. many
thanks for your input. regards John

| Hi James. Thanks for your response.
If indeed there is no more room at the top for the last 3 anchors to scroll
to, how can I fix this. (This may be the same reason why my gradient
backgrounds are getting cut.)
Please help

Well, you could put a large margin at the bottom of the page, but I
wouldn't.

| Thanks James. You saved my sanity and the future of my website.
I increased the table height and indeed it needed so much height space at the
top for the last 3 anchors to work. I'll just think of an artistic collage to
fill in the space at the top and bottom (as brought about by having to increase
the height significantly.
Thanks again.
