Author ftp error - cannot connect to host

The other day I wanted to update my site. Tried to connect and received this
error box "FTP error - cannot connect to host". Nothing has changed in the
site definitions. Tried to uninstall and reinstall dreamweaver. FTP log is not
logging anything as well.

Is this a problem with my host, dreamweaver or my computer a firewall issue
all of a sudden? Like I said, connecting and updating was never an issue
before.
I am using Dreamweaver 4 and Windows XP. I use NAV 2005, windows Antispyware
beta. My host and domain name are all current, so I am at a total loss...
Please help!

1. Disable NAV for the purposes of this testing. Then disable it again.
You can even uninstall it if you like. Norton is the source of many of the
FTP problems posted here.

2. Tell me what happens when you click on the Test button in your Remote
site definition.

Oops - DW4?

Ugh.

OK - tell me what happens when you try to connect after disabling NAV.

You do know that DW4 predates WXP by several years, right?

No, but I certainly wouldn't trust reliable operation of DW4 in WXPPro,
personally. Knowing DW4's need to place internal files in certain locations
that no longer exist in WXP would scare me.

Are you sure NAV is disabled?

"Are you sure NAV is disabled?"

I believe I disabled it.

Lower corner of desktop, right click on icon, choose disable auto protect.
--let me know if that is not right.

That's not it. That only disables the realtime scanning. To really disable
it you need to remove it from your startup, and then reboot the system.

Horray!
Thank you for your help!

I disabled it, and also disabled my firewall....and now I am able to connect!

Not the most optimal situation - but it will do for now.

I really appreciate your time.

Are you connecting to the internet via a router? If so, you do not need the
firewall.

As for Norton, well, nothing Norton will ever touch my systems, so I can't
really help you further there.
