custom error pages with templates

| I'm using templates for the first time and really LOVE them - but I'm having a
problem that only occurs part of the time.
My hosting provider permits customized error pages, so I constructed mine in a
template. If I type a non-existent URL and get a 400 error, the template shows
up.
When I click from a google site engine link to a non-existent page, it also
shows up correctly.
When i clink a hyperlink from within the site that goes to a non-existent
page, the template and css links are missing, but the 400 error shows up with
my customized wording.
Is there a seasoned Dreamweaver user out there who might have a clue as to why
this is happening?
TIA for your help,
Dena
