Author Library items not updating

Hi,

I am new to templates/library and not sure if I am doing something wrong or if
this is how it should work.

When I update a template DW2004 (7.01) asks to find and update files, it says
it did it but only for my local copy of the site.

For it to be live on the web I must upload each page (or in my case the whole
site).. is this right? Is there a way to do an update of the template that
automatically goes live?

That's how templates work. They are a local tool only, as are Library
items.

Yes, but I wouldn't use it. You can elect to automatically upload files
when they are saved, but in my opinion, this is inviting disaster.

If you want things to automatically update on the server, then use a
server-side include for that content - in DW press F1 and search for
'server-side include' to read more.

Murray,
I have never tried this but couldnt you go to the server and upload your
template, then choose to update pages that use the template (on the server)
and it would perform the same action as it does on the local side?
I use the sync tool. Is that not the way to go if you are using a template?
It has always worked well for me and I have had no problems.

If it has worked for you then you have witnessed a miracle. Template markup
has no significance to the server, and will only work within DW. The only
files that can be changed are in the local site. Thus, the template files
have no functional purpose on the server side of things. The only reason to
upload them would be to share them with someone else.

I have not tried it on the server. Meaning, I have not tried to update on
the serverside. When I said that "it has always worked for me", I meant it
has worked well for me to update on my local then put the files to the
server. Maybe one of these days when I have time I will read up on how to
do the'serverside include', until then I will just have to settle for what I
have. It took me months to redo my site...I don't have the strength to redo
things again. I will look into it though. Thanks Murray.
