How to stop copying
|
|
| nflvikings 2005-07-18, 7:33 pm |
| Hello,
Does anyone know how to when someone clicks on an image, a pop up screen or
warning comes up and says that the image can't be copied and has a little
message why with an o.k. button. I have no idea what this is called and how to
do it.
If anyone knows how to do this, I would really appreciate how to do this.
Thanks,
Ben

It's done with javascript. But, the real question is WHY would you want to
do this? It doesn't actually stop people from copying your images, it's
annoying, and potentially an accessibility hurdle for your site users.

This is a fairly common question. The information at this URL ...
http://continue.to/hope/
.... offers the best summary I can think of for the issues involved in this
endeavor.

| Because these are really rare photos. I've already found and caught two people selling these on ebay and some for over a hundred dollars a pop and it's why I want to do this.

| Then either water mark them, or use a low resolution image. Disabling
the right-click won't stop these people from taking your images.

Then what you're trying to do is definitely inadequate. The kind of people
who would be stopped by a little JavaScript trick are not the kind who steal
expensive artwork and sell it.

But doing this won't stop those folks from selling them on ebay.
(And who in the hell sells GIFs on ebay? Or, rather, who in the sell would
BUY them?)
Anyways, if you own the copyrights on the photos, then you want to use a
lawyer to handle the problem, as technology won't solve it for you.

| If you hold the copyright and they're on ebay, contact ebay.
I assume you are the photographer. And I'll assume that they are well enough
know photos that someone will pay for them from a website.
Are you selling original prints? If so, sell a catalog. Most monographs are
actually intended as gallery catalogs. Let people buy the catalog at
something that covers your costs or as an additional revenue stream. Let
people order actual prints from that.
As for anything you post on the web, you will need to make the file into
something unusable by others. It usually also means people will not be able
to tell what they're looking at.
Welcome to digital art.
Best Wishes

lol.. true. Or maybe just Photoshop. Would that be great to see, what he
could have done with Photoshop? Like that scene in Bill and Ted's Excellent
Adventure, when Beethoven comes back from the past, goes into the music
store and discovers keyboard synthesizers and plays some wild stuff.

I made a picture and sliced it in Photoshop. When I look at the page in
