Hi, I know I should read some manual about site managment, but I haven't found
a good explaination of how it works. When I started my site I only had a local
site setup. When I would preview my site in a browser, it would call the page
from my hard drive into the browser. I created a prototype and wanted to set up
a testing server that my client could get to from the internet to see what I
have done and make comments. I did a quick install of Apache on my other
Windows XP machine and created the root diretory for their site.

Once the server was setup, I went into DW and setup my testing server under
site managment. I set it as a PHP/MySQL server, because I intend on eventually
setting that up too, and I set it to Local/Network because it is a server on my
private LAN. I set the root directory in the appropriate box and then it asked
for another address with a note saying that it is usually the same as the root
directory. In the box I put:

http://itlogic.homeunix.org:9809/ErinRose/index.htm

(by the way, feel free to take a look and give my your opinions, good and bad)
Anyway, after putting that address, when I prieview my page in a browser it
calles the page from the testing server to preview instead of my local site.
I'm afraid I might have put some location in the wrong place. Then, once I set
up the remote server and use the put and get commands, how will it know if I'm
putting and getting from the remote or testing servers? Can someone point me to
some good instructions on that topic. I do have the book Dream Weaver MX 2004
From the Source (or whatever), but they don't mention setting up testing
servers and I couldn't find anything in the help files.

Thanks!

ok, let me ask this a different way. If I have a testing server set up, do I
need a local copy? Does it just edit the files directly on the testing server
if I have one setup? If some one has a testing server setup can you explain how
your site is setup?

My testing server always points into my local root folder. This means I
test and edit on the same system with my local webserver.

Hello again. Perhaps I am misunderstanding the point of a testing server. I
have my local site on my laptop. If I need to, I can go to my client with my
laptop and show them my work. I still want to maintain the master on my laptop
in case I should need to do that.

I set up a testing server on my LAN. This can be accessed as any web server,
but it is not for production services.

The way it is working now, whenever I preview my work in a browser, it calls
the page from my testing server. This is not what I want because the new
modifications are located on my laptop. Therefore, I have to do a put to the
testing server everytime I make a change.

Would it be better to set my test server as a remote site? But, then I would
have to change the definition of the remote site when I'm ready to use FTP to
put the site on the production server.

Am I doing something wrong, or is this by design?
