"Exception thrown in naitive function" Error
|
|
| TMonk252 2005-03-30, 7:36 am |
| I recently encountered an error that I haven't been able to resolve:
While executing generateDynamicSourceBindings in Recordset.htm, the following
JavaScript error(s) occurred:
At line 357 of file "C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Dreamweaver MX
2004\Configuration\DataSources\Recorset.js":
Exception thrown in native function
What does this mean or better yet, how do I fix it? I've had no problems
setting up other recordsets in the past for my application, but now every time
I try to set up a new recordset, I get this error.
Any assistance you could lend me would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

| Hi, "TMonk252",
The Exception Throw in Native Function error message usually means that
Dreamweaver has run out of memory trying to accomplish something in the
stated file. Sometimes the problem is Dreamweaver native files, sometimes it
is files installed by an extension. Recordset.js is a native file.
Even though the error message points to the Program configuration, it could
still be a copy of Recordset.js in your user's configuration that's having
trouble. (The error messages are just not specific enough.)
It is possible that an extension you've installed (and potentially already
uninstalled) has added a changed version of Recordset.js to your user's
configuration. Dreamweaver will use what's in the user's configuration and
if the file isn't there it then looks in its program conifuration. When an
extension developer chooses to go ahead and customize a native Dreamweaver
file, they usually will mark the file as a system file, meaning that when
you uninstall the extension the file is not removed.
Here's what I'd usually say if the file in the error message isnt' a native
Dreamweaver file:
"Have you installed any extensions in Dreamweaver? If so, try removing any
extensions that are listed as Server Behavior, Suite, Translator or "Other"
as the extension type in the Extension Manager. (Commands, Objects, and the
rest are unlikely causes of this issue.) them and see if the problem stops.
If that doesn't work, make backups of your site definitions and any
extensions you've installed. You'll need to remove all user configurations
or simply re-install Dreamweaver and allow it to remove them for you. (I
believe there's a prompt for this, but I can't recall its label at the
moment.)
If you didn't install any extensions or recently uninstall a Server
Behavior, Suite, Translator or "Other" type, the error you're seeing is
internal to Dreamweaver and most likely not something easily fixed. You
should report the issue to Macromedia and offer to send them the offending
file(s). http://www.macromedia.com/go/wish"
However since Recordset.js is a native Dreamweaver file, you'll have to skip
to the "make backups", "remove all user configurations or simply re-install
Dreamweaver" part if you have indeed installed extensions previously. (Any
extension that relies on the original Recordset.js file may not function as
expected any longer and may produce unexpected errors because a rogue
extension changed the original file.) That's the only way to be sure your
configuration is clean.
If you're interested in hearing more about extensions that
overwrite\override native Dreamweaver files, Tom Muck wrote a post on his
blog about this subject that pretty much sums up my take on the issue as
well. http://www.tom-muck.com/blog/index.cfm?newsid=53
Hope this helps, and good luck!

| I was able to resolve this issue by uninstalling Dreamweaver MX and
reinstalling it. Thanks again for the most detailed explanation on this issue
on any forum. I searched all over the place for help on what this error means
and was unsucessful until you replied.

| Hi DG,
You're quite welcome. If you'd care to share your scenario with us it may
help others out to know what your experience was and possibly how it related
to my original response.
In any case, I'm glad it helped and that you've resolved the issue.
Regards,
~Angela

| I also encountered this error and this post has been a life saver, thanks very
much Angela ; )
After installing an extension, I started getting errors pointing to the
Recordset.js file when trying to create recordsets. Luckily I had another
computer here with the same version of Dreamweaver and the same extensions
installed (except for the extension that caused my prob). I simply copied over
the recordset.js file from the user configuration folder (
%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application
Data\Macromedia\Dreamweaver MX 2004\Configuration\ServerBehaviors\Shared ) on
the good computer to my corrupted PC, and she was fixed!
Thanks again Angela!
