Author Dreamweaver and Contribute set up

I have a site built in Dreamweaver which I am trying to set up for Contribute.
I went into Edit Site in Dreamweaver and checked the box for Contribute. A
window came up asking for the administrator password. I don't believe I set one
up yet. Is there a way to find out if there is a password or what it is? I read
in the forums that I could delete the _mm folder and the _baks and _notes
folders to get rid of all of the Contribute settings for the site, I did that,
but It is still asking me for the Administrator password. Can anyone help?

suggestion-
go to the contribute general forum, and search on lost password.

there's been posts there by myself (alan) and others on how to totally
remove contribute admin using ftp (delete the _mm folder at root level of
remote site) AND other posts on how to set the password to nothing by
editing the contribute.xml file and removing the password value- so you can
login as admin without deleting the whole setup, then change the [] empty
password to a new one.

If you are still getting the password request, the contribute.xml file is
still on the remote server...

found a post using groups.google.com

Method One with wipe ALL contribute settings and allow you to start from
scratch. _Method Two will retain user and group settings. _Go with the one
that best suits your needs.

---------------------------
***method one)

If you don't care about the current Users and groups settings being WIPED
OUT this is quick:

1) connect to remote site with a different ftp client (because the folder is
hidden in dreamweaver's ftp)

2) at the root level of the remote site, find the _mm folder that contains
contribute.xml and delete it.

3) You can now connect with dreamweaver and go into dw or contribute and set
it up all over.

***method two)
If you want to preserve the current users and groups settings-

1 )Use a different ftp client (because the _mm folder is hidden in
Dreamweaver)
connect to site.
Find the _mm folder, open it.
download the contribute.xml file to your machine.

2) Open the contribute.xml file in a text editor.
Find this line, near top of file:
<admin_password value='4E2B443FF7blahblahblah2 7CECD38FB8' />

3)click in cursor, and delete the value, change to this:
<admin_password value='' />
---That is two 'single quote marks' with nothing between them---
Save the file.

4) go back to ftp client.
connect to remote site, and go back to _mm folder.
Rename the existing remote contribute.xml file to contributebak.bak (just
in case something is messed up and you want to revert)
Upload the changed contribute.xml file you just edited.

5) Now open Dw (or contribute)
Go to Admin Contribute Site.
When password prompt comes up- DON'T TYPE ANYTHING. Just hit enter.
-- because your password is actually null, empty, nothing....
You are in.

6)Now- click on 'Sitewide Settings' and go to "change password"
Create a new password to change it from the blank one...
This process will preserve the users and groups settings.
