Dreamweaver MX, Flash plugin detect question
|

| Groucho 2005-03-31, 7:33 am |
| Doing a CD that will feature Flash movies (web suthoring program is
Dreamweaver MX, computer is G4 Mac running OSX)
At the moment I have some spiel saying that if the user has trouble
playing the Flash movies they should click a link --
http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave...ad/download.cgi
--
which seems an okay way to do it.
How can I set it up so that the browser can detect the user has Flash
and, if (s)he doesn't, they will be sent to that (or another> ) URL
where they can download the plugin or player. (Is it in Behaviors?)
Thanks
Matt

Hi Matt,
I'm pretty sure there is a simple JavaScript detection routine but I think
you could possibly perform the following trick to detect if flash is
installed.
I would create a simple Loading / Please Wait HTML Page which has a very
simple flash movie embedded, the flash movie will simply redirect the users
browser to you main content page.
I would then add a simple META REFRESH tag of about 10 - 20 seconds to the
above simple HTML page which basically redirects the browser to a page
saying that flash could not be detected and saying where your users can
download flash from.
The clever but simple part is that if flash is installed then the flash
movie will redirect the browser before the HTML META REFRESH and therefore
direct the user to your content.
Hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Paul Woodward
