Author OT: Jump menu dropdowns

I am so far from being ready to implement this it's not even funny, but
having played with Linda's Photo Magic for a good part of the day I'm
tired and feel like stirring up some mischief.

When I go to menus that drop down with a list of choices (alabama,
california, you know the kind of thing)--I would EXPECT that I could
begin typing C-A-L and come to the right thing. I REALLY HATE when the
second letter you type doesn't zero in on where you're aiming but jumps
instead to that letter. I.e., I type C-A and am taken from California
to Alabama.

When I get to the point where I'm designing these things for myself,
will I be able to make it act the way I WANT instead of in this inane
way that I don't want? Is it simply a programming/scripting/coding
choice? Or can it not be done the way that makes sense to me?

Idly wondering . . .
