I recently designed a website that is 770 pixels wide. I read an article that
said resolution is commonly 800x600 - so take 30 pixels off the sides and go to
town. It looks great on my 20' Mac monitor - but appears as an unwielding
bohemoth on smaller PC monitors. The images that make up the site are much
larger. I associate that with the screens resolution - but really don't
understand how it all ties together. Should I go back to designing web sites
that are 650 pixels wide? Sites like CNN.com are almost 800 pixels wide. Any
thoughts, opinions, current thinking, explanations - fire away! I appreciate
your help.

The monitor resolution isn't what you need to be concerned about. The size
of the end-user's browser's viewport is what you need to be worried about.

Sometimes it will be close to the monitor size (if it's fully maximized) but
often it won't me. And, often, you have things like the favorites toolbar
taking up even more space.

I rarely open my browser beyond 700 pixesls in width. But that's just me.

So, that's one option. The other is to design fluid sites that stretch as
needed.
