A client has asked for a forum on their site as an added addition to
what was initially discussed.

I don't do forums or any other language related inter-active stuff. I
try to keep to the areas that I know best and are within my limited
abilities. They knew this at the outset of the project but the goalposts
have changed almost daily since the sites concept. Ha! same old story
hey!!! Clients who'd have them, they just don't listen.

Anyway I'm quite happy as this client is fast becoming a pain in the XXX
to 'knock the project on the head', cut my losses, run and tell them to
go f--k around with someones elses head. I don't want a complicated life.

Before I do rush into making that sort of rash decision has anyone with
limited server language knowledge (php) had any success at implementing
a decent looking forum on their site?

I would consider a 'paid for' software package if it were the simplest
way to get up and running. Its needs to be php.

Cheers

http://www.phpbb.com/ is supposed to be very easy to use.
As for customising - the client may be happy with the 'out of the box'
solution...
Otherwise you may find it time consuming to change the look... tell them so
many dollars for out of the box and then Xs that by $1000 to customise - I
bet you they go with out of the box :-D

lol yeah Im just about through with this particular client. I'll have a
look at both solutions. If I can get one or the other up and running in
about and hour I might press on, if not I'll change my address and
telephone number :)

I installed vBulletin (PHP) for a client - it wasn't hard and looked and
worked great with minimal customization.
