PHP is a server-side language. A PHP has code on it that the server first
executes before sending the HTML to the browser.

AS for hit counters...they are pretty much useless. If you want to know how
many people visit your site/page, then you want to analyze the server logs.
Most competant web hosts will have that set up for you already...you just
need to ask them about it.
