| Yes you can but you need to first make a site with the server model specified so that DW knows which code to use when you select this option from server behaviors.

| I also was hoping someone could help me figure out how to password protect some
portions of my website. I'm new to dreamweaver, so am starting from scratch.
I've seen some free downloads for utilities to do this? Is this something I
need or is it a matter of simply developing basic code? Also how do I generate
user id's and passwords? I only need a simple level of protection, and don't
need a high level of security.
Thansk you in advance!

| I also am trying to figure out how to password protect certain pages of a
website. Can anyone explain in plain English how this is done. I also only need
simple protection, these aren't secrets vital to national security or anything.
I really apprecaite any help.
Thanks!

Have you checked with your host to see if they offer that option. Mine
does, and it's not a 5-star one by any means.

| Thanks for the response - I'm a newbie to DW and inherited a site, so I'm not
up on much of the server side or set up. Can you go into more detail about
"the server model specified so that DW knows which code to use when you select
this option from server behaviors" that you stated?
Thanks again

Server model can also be putted on a simpler term as 'Server technology'.
Usually when talking about static pages we just sent html code that the
browser renders. There is nothing going on the server other than just show
the files you got on the location.
A server technology is also code that get processed on the server, then
the server can manipulate this files to display different information
regarding the instructtions. This instructions are usually embedded on
links, or buttons or different elements that reside on your browser.
There are many technologies that do this, all with different advantages
and disadvantages. Usually to the data that is inserted into your files by
the code is taken from a datasource or database. So at the end you enter
with a 3 level implementation Server - Code - Database.
This is the server model, there are many options here are some of them:
- PHP mysql Apache
- PHP ADODB Apache
- ASP Access IIS
- Coldfusion Access IIS
- JSP Oracle IAS
- .NET SQL Server Apache-Mono
Our company produces extensions to create this web applications and work
on the first 4 server models.

| what kind of server? what kind of scripting can you use on this hosting?
--IF-- this machine is an Apache server and allows using PHP, here is a free
script that gives you an admin page in this folder to add/edit/delete user's
access.
http://www.krizleebear.de/phpaccess/dynamisch/index.php
You could also look inside of your site's Control Panel or CPanel, if you
hosting has that feature.
