Author use of images on site ??

if you use images that you purchase on corbis or other photo sites to use for
your webdesign, can you edit the image, like change it to b/w, darken, remove
something from, add something to a person, take a background out - I would
assume so since you have to blend/adjust the image to the site you are building.

yes.

i'm looking at istockphoto.com .. it doesn't mention anything about
manipulating an image; it does say 'can't use any image in the Content that
depicts a person to endorse a business, product or service.' - this I don't
understand.

I would say its taken for granted that you can manipulate the image in
any way you want. Lets face it hardly any images that you see now are
not doctored in photoshop/fireworks somehow.

They are not licenced images, which do have some restriction of usage on
them, but 'royalty free' which basically means you can do what you want
with them, after paying a fee to use them.

Usually, but it depends on the TOS.

It basically means you can't use an image of a bloke and pretend he is the
managing director of the company.

thanks, istockphoto is very cheap, cheapest pricing i've seen $1 per image and even less when you buy bundles.

of course you can do whatever you want with the images 9if you purchase
them: that's why you purchase them in the first place.
Designers never use purchased images as is, without cropping them,
changing the colors, combining them with other images, etc.

Not necessarily. It depends on the type of license you buy.
