Books Recommendation for Learning PHP
|
|
| Skaterstu 2005-12-27, 3:30 am |
| Hi All,
This is similar to the post created a week or so ago related to CSS. I need
to teach myself PHP in order to further my knowledge of web design. Which are
the best books out there for beginners? I prefer a more hands on approach
(long boring descriptive books will just send me to sleep), where I can learn
by tutorials. My friend is in UK at the moment so he can brng me back a couple
of books. Also if anyone knows of any useful websites for PHP learning then
that would also be good to know.
Cheers
Stuart

| Cheers Adrian... I am actually going to subscribe to a year with CMX, as soon as I get my paypal problems sorted out. Can I only pay by paypal, and not by credit card??

Might also want to consider "Foundation PHP for Dreamweaver 8" by David
Powers, ISBN: 1590595696.

Since this is a DW group; I find _PHP web development with DW 2004_
by Kent & Powers (APRESS) very good and the only book I could find
that combined PHP and DW.

Don't blame me. I voted for Gore.

I bought it after reading your recommendation in the last paragraph of your
review of "Beginning PHP 5 and MySQL: From Novice to Professional" at
http://japan-interface.co.uk/webdes...shelf.php?cat=1 :-) I wanted to
learn PHP from scratch away from a DW context. It's helped me enormously.
I've also ordered your co-written "PHP Web Development with Dreamweaver MX
2004" -- primarily for the CMS case study --even though I've upgraded to
DW8. I'm still running DW MX 2004 so it should still be helpful to me.

Actually, the book I was shamelessly plugging is my latest ("Foundation
PHP for Dreamweaver 8", which came out a couple of weeks ago. I've not
seen any independent reviews yet, but early feedback from people who've
seen the book has been very positive.
Whichever book you buy, I hope it does what you want. And thanks for
buying mine. Every little helps. ;)

| I have about five how-to PHP books spread all around me at the moment. The one
I'm getting the most out of is by Jeffrey Bardzell, called "Dreamweaver MX 2004
with asp, coldfusion and php." His step-by-step instructions are clear, and he
doesn't overburden one with the "other two" applications if one is only
interested in a single application (e.g., I am only interested in PHP; I'm
learning interesting things about the other two applications, but none of that
gets in my way as I go).
I've also found a surprising amount of PHP info in the Visual Quickstart
Guide, "Macromedia Dreamweaver Advanced for Windows & Macintosh," by Towers,
Magee and Hadjitarkhani. The copy I have was written for the DW version right
before MX 2004 but is still 99% accurate for the MX 2004 software. However,
you'd want to look for an updated version of the book if you're using
Dreamweaver 8.
Hope this helps some.

Yes, I am, Murray. The raw fish and sake were wonderful. I'm not quite
so sure about the eight feet of snow, though. :) Fortunately, that was
only for a couple of days, when I had to attend to some business on the
northern side of the Japan Alps. Tokyo and Kyoto were free of snow -
cold, but with glorious sunshine most of the time.

| I was going to suggest your book as well, have recently purchased it, because
it was a good value and an easy read. (Now if publishers would just charge us a
comparitive price in the UK.)
However I imagine you can't get much better than a direct not from the
author.:beer;

Thanks, John. I'm glad you liked it. I agree it would be nice for
computer books to be more affordable. For some strange reason,
Amazon.co.uk is not offering any discount on the book, although
Amazon.com has it at 34% off.
I see, however, that it's available at a 25% discount at Computer
Manuals (www.compman.co.uk).
