Read-only file is not RO when published

| :confused; I'm working on a family history geneaology site. I have included a
navigable family tree and have made the file read-only on my local site as I do
not want people to be able to modify the information on their own. (The file
in question is a .paf file - software from the Mormon Church.) However, when I
(put) upload the file, the file on the published (remote) site is not read only
- it is an editable file and I see no way to make it read-only once it is
remote.
Any suggestions? if you want to look at this, the site is
www.flora-and-sam.com. On the left you will see a family tree button. Click
that to get to the page that will take you to the family tree link. Thanks!

You can work all you want to on making the file read-only. However,
once somebody clicks on the link and downloads it, there is nothing you
can do about how the downloader treats it. It's simple for them to
right-click on the file and uncheck the read-only attribute. The way
you're doing it, the tree will display /only/ on the site viewer's
computer. (Also, AFAIK, there is no program on a Mac which will read
PAF files, so you're excluding anybody on a Mac from getting your
information.)
To display your tree within the confines of your website, you need a
server-hosted genealogy application. My favorite is PHPGedView:
http://www.phpgedview.net/
You generate a GEDCOM, then upload it. PHPGedView generates trees and
reports in real time.
Have a look at your site in FireFox. An increasing number of people
will be viewing your site in something other than IE, and you should
see how they view it. "WARNING AOL USERS! This site is best viewed
using Internet Explorer. AOL users should use Explorer in conjunction
with their AOL connection rather than using the standard AOL browser."
is not acceptable on a website.
