Hello,

I am not sure if this is the right forum, if not I am sorry, but still need
your help. I am a web designer and have in the past used the same host for
all of my sites, but for some reason in the last couple of months I have
been unable to get a hold of them. I have tried email/phone and more with no
luck. I have 3 new domains that I neeed to register and host. I am afraid to
register domain and wait until host contacts me to setup the site. I would
like some reccomendations on some good web hosts that are both good and
economical. I have looked at godaddy and 1and 1. I need it to support either
ASP and PHP or at least ASP. I also need to be create email accounts, ftp
access, domain forwarding and email forwarding as well as forms to email,
preferably in html format rather than plain text.

Any help is greatly appreciated...

Thanks

Paul

I've had really excellent results with Laughing Squid (www.laughingsquid.net).
They have a variety of plans and easy implementation. They support PHP and Cold
Fusion, but not ASP. Go Daddy is good, too. They offer stuff a la carte so you
can get exactly what you need. For super cheap, you can visit ucvhost.com
($1/month, can't beat that). No real support, but fairly good. A caveat about
any hosting site: if you get wind that they're being bought, BAIL!

My advise is phone the helplines and see how fast they answer you. I gave up
last year and got my own server which I use for my clients sites. Costs a
bit more but it's less aggravtion.

There are plenty of good hosts to choose from. I have a VPS at ServInt that
I use to host client sites, and their service and support is top-notch.
(Although they only offer Unix hosting, so if ASP is a must-have you'd
probably be better off elsewhere.) I second the recommendations to call
their help line, send some e-mails with questions, and so forth. You can
tell a lot by the responses you get (or don't get). I like to ask pretty
detailed questions: not is PHP available, but what version of PHP is
available, and is it installed as an Apache module or cgi? Do you permit the
use of .htaccess files, and specifically what options do you permit and not
permit? Do you use SUExec? Safemode? What if I need a specific PERL module
that you don't have installed -- will you install it for me? That sort of
thing.

I'd recommend separating your hosting from your domain registration, though.
Register domains with an accredited registrar (a la GoDaddy, NameCheap,
etc.) and host sites with a good hosting company (a la somewhere other than
your registrar.) I've seen too many hosts "accidentally" register domains in
their own name, drag their feet turning the domain over when the client
wants to host elsewhere, etc. I had to track down a domain for a client last
year whose domain registration turned out to be with a reseller of a
reseller of a reseller, located in Germany (we're in the US), with someone
the client had never heard of listed as the registrant and admin contact.

Always register your own domains -- don't let the host do it for you -- and
keep it separate from the hosting. And register them with a good domain
registrar that provides full access to domain management (i.e., contact
information, nameservers, etc.).

Hi there

I strongly recommend www.cyberface.co.za . They're a south african web company
and they're AMAZING. I was a first time webmaster when i joined them and
pestered them with hours of silly questions about uploading and problems that I
was having. They always replied speedily and were sooo helpful. Another bonus
is that they're really affordable!

Tell them I told you so! (Leigh Hunter)

good luck

Without a doubt, the best I've experienced, as stated in another post.
I've used a lot of them in the past 10 years, from Verio to ChicagoWebs
to Dreamhost to other obscure hosting companies.

I tend to do my own domains via godaddy, though CT will pay the domain
fee (first year) if you purchased an account.

24/7, always courteous, helpful, gentle and friendly, never EVER didn't
get a person at the other end of the call NO MATTER WHAT TIME. Well,
maybe it might happen on Christmas, but I haven't tried then.

All the services, asp, php, cf, mySQL, msSQL, carts, killer control
panels, mail admin, reseller features, great stats, etc, etc, starting
from $2.95 for developer site to dedicated servers.

Many folks that have been here in these forums use them and have for years.
