Author Newbie Messed Up--Deleted Key Template Files?

I'm in a pickle. I've been using DW for the first time and steadily making
progress re-creating my website. I adapted one of the templates from the
starter page templates and it's worked beautifully as I've built page upon
page.

Stupidly, in my zeal to clean up extraneous files (I had a lot of 'false
starts' with quite a few attempts with the program when I first downloaded it),
I was deleting a bunch of files and--near as I can tell--I must have deleted
SOMETHING key. Now when I pull up the template (which looks fine and appears
as it should, including in the preview mode) but when I create a new page (and
now when I pull up SOME existing pages, but not all) with the template, once I
preview that page all the key template formatting is gone. No image at the top
(just a notation that there's a jpg there), no pretty fancy navigation bar
color, and all the fonts are identical. Clearly, I've done something
bad--perhaps deleting one of the files that has the information in it for the
color and style of the navigation bar and nifty top area that's in my template.

I'm no techno-genius here so I can't really troubleshoot what I've done here
exactly, since I know only enough to be dangerous.

I'm using the trial version of Dreamweaver 8 -- and will be purchasing
shortly.

I doubt that anyone can troubleshoot this for me remotely--since it's so hard
to explain well without seeing my machine and my files. But if anyone has a
light bulb moment with an idea for me, I'd be most grateful. Many thanks!

Are you previewing with Temp files enabled? Are you using Root relative
links?

Hi Murray,

Um. . . I don't know how to enable temp files.

And my ignorance will shine through again here -- but I don't know what "root relative" files means.

Sheepishly,
Anne
