Author Help! File type change on Save

I have a problem with Dreamweaver changing the file type of the pages I edit.
When I save these pages the name is changed from index.shtml to
index.shtml.new. This is happing on my local machine as well as the web
server. This started a week ago for some unknown reason. What is causing
this? Has this happened to anyone else?

:brokenheart;

This is a contribute site?

Then you have inadvertantly enabled Contribute compatibility in your site
definition.

No, we don't use contribute. But, there could be 3 different people updating
the site off and on during the day. The other two people are not having this
problem. And, it only started a week ago. I can change a file named
index.shtml and when I save it the name is changed to index.shtml.new

How do I turn it off?

Look in your site definition under the Contribute category.

I tried to change the contribute in the site and I closed DW and re-opened and
edited a file and saved it and the problem still exist. So, I edited the site
again and realized the contribute was re-set again. I changed it again not to
use contribute and did the test again and got the same results. Hmm, is it
possible I need to do Contribute Administration?

This is without connecting to the remote site? Did you tell me which DW you
are using?
