Library Item & Drop-Down Navigation Problems
|

| I am a Flash guy, so some of the Dreamweaver stuff is a bit newer to me.
Basically, I created a header for a website I'm working on in Fireworks. This
header includes the navigation which has drop-downs on 3 of the 5 menu options.
I export this Fireworks file into Dreamweaver as a library item in the event my
client would like to add/change the menu items. When I include the
header/library item in the HTML doc I'm building in Dreamweaver, the links all
go dead and the drop-down menu doesn't even show up. I've read this problem
happening elsewhere, but does Dreamweaver 8 help to remedy this?
The other option I have is to build the same navigation in Flash, and then
include HTML links to the same pages elsewhere on the website (probably in the
footer.) At least I know that when I update the Flash header, I can expect
consistent results.
Any thoughts? Any work-arounds?

| This will not work using the method you are using.
But frankly, I'd hate to see you use either method you propose. The FW
menus are plumb awful - they are massively heavy, fiddly cumbersome, and
just badly broken for so many reasons. On the other hand, having a
navigation element in Flash (without redundant alternative menus) is
inaccessable, non-spiderable, and doesn't work if you don't have the Flash
plugin.
Is it too late to consider other alternatives?

| I'm open to anything. I just want to make sure that when my client wants to
change the meu, I can make simple changes and then update all the menus across
all the pages. If I were to use the Flash Navigation, I would have html
versions of the same links located elsewhere on each page so it would be
spiderable. What do you suggest?

| I suggest using a server-side include for the menu. Further, I suggest
using a menu like any of the ones at the PVII site (I have often used the
PopMenuMagic one), or at Thierry's site....

| Now that's what I'm talking about. Pop Menu Magic looks great. I haven't tried
it yet, but I'm sure the amount of time it will save me ( as well as headaches)
the money will be well worth it only ($90!) I'd rather use something like this,
that someone else has put the time in and I get to reap the benefits.
Thanks for your help!

| I absolutely agree with you. That's money well spent in my book....
