I am using DW8 and find the preview useful as I use a lot of SSI and PHP in the
web pages. When I click on Preview and a temp file is 'Put' on the server,
sometimes it 'Puts' it quickly other times I sit here and watch the grass grow.
I can cancel and start again several times but it will not work again for some
time.

Before I start howling at my ISP I need to check first that this is not a
'known' issue with other DW8 users.

Yes, I get this too. Sometimes it is immediate and other times I watch redwoods
grow.

Do you get these also:

1] When you are 'watching redwoods', does your CPU fan start screaming

2] When you close DW8 the Background File Activity daialog window appears as
if you were trying to preview a page.

I get neither of those symptoms.

I have not had the "watch the grass grow" problem, but after upgrading to
Dreamweaver 8, I do experience frequent FTP problems. Specifically, after
checking out a file and trying to put the changes, I get an "Access is denied"
permissions error. When I drop back to 2004 MX, I can check out and upload the
same file with no problems. Seems to me that DM8 is not checking out files
correctly.

Are you collaborating on this site with other developers?

How are you accessing the staging server - FTP or Local/Network?

I use the FTP for everything (not accessable through local network). I am not working with other developers, although I have "Check In/Out" turned on to let me know which files I edit.

So your development environment has two locations defined - local (on your
hard drive) and remote (on your webhost)?

I want to encourage you NOT to use checkin/checkout as a solo developer. It
imposes a new and unnecessary rigor on your editing activities, and carries
no benefit to you. This is particularly true if you are using templates or
library items - in fact, it could lead to errors in that case.

To tell which files you have edited, just use EDIT | Select Recently
Modified....

Once again I'm dissapointed by Dreamweaver's ftp client. I'm having frequent
server communication issues. Sure it "runs" in the background, but you can't
check-out or post any files until its done "running".
