Author DW8 Freezes - can't find old post

Backup: Murray responded to my post, except I have no clue how to find that
post again. I've looked and looked page after page and my eyes are bugged.

Okay, so we'll start over and I'll tell you where I'm at on this problem.

Original problem: I can't define a site in DW8. As soon as I click on Site
-> New Site, that's as far as I can get. I see the hour glass and it stalls
for "hours". I can't even exit out of the software until I've tried a dozen
(at least) times exiting and closing error report, exiting and closing error
report, over and over and over again.

So Murry said rename the Configuration folder to something like
xConfiguration. Okay, found the folder, no problem, renamed it. I get an
error message: Cannot REname configuration. Access is denied.

So that won't work.

And NOW when I just OPEN DW8 and click on Files -> site in the files panel, I
can't even get to the site that WAS defined before this problem started.

So I'm back to square one.

Hope you can help.
Thanks
PJ

Of course you can rename the configuration folder. I've done so many times.
What steps are you taking to do so that is giving you this error? And what
OS do you have?

Hmmmm................really? Well, I located the folder, exactly like Murray
said to do, and then I right-clicked to RENAME the folder -- in fact, I'll do
it again here and just see if it works and tell you the exact
steps.............yup, highlight Configuration folder, right-click, rename,
xConfiguration, error message: cannot rename configuration, access denied. DW
is not open when I'm doing this.

OS is Win XP.

I had to do this myself over the weekend and I know it does work. :)
Maybe try rebooting your system. Don't try and open DW at all. Find your
config file and try and rename it with a fresh reboot. Unless of course
it's a permissions thing. Are you logged in as admin or another user?

Are you logged in as admin or another user?

I'm the only user on my computer. I don't have to log in when I reboot. I
just log in and go for it.
But if you've tried this, then I'll reboot and try to rename the config file
before opening DW and see if that works.
Thanks

Well, I was able to rename it, but it sure didn't change anything. Now I can't
even click on ANYTHING in DW and it just freezes. This really sucks! I have a
site to work on! and a client waiting. Oh man...........I never should have
got DW8. This is REALLY discouraging. My DWMX2004 worked smooth. Now I have
to figure out how to just get DW8 working so I can get BACK to work!

Well, if anyone has any other suggestions, doesn't matter what I do to that
program now. It doesn't work at all anyway, so whatever you want me to try,
I'm game! Can't get much worse.

Bummer, huh!! WAH!

Pea-Jay .. I have used DW8 for some time .. and it works .. and I have the
same OS as you. It also doesn't really matter if DW is open or closed
(although closed it should be) cause I tried it both ways after your post
yesterday and I was able to rename.

Here's another question. Which configuration folder are you trying to
rename? Is it the one in C:/Documents and Settings/yourname/Application
Data/Macromedia/Dreamweaver 8/Configuration? That's the one it should be.
Or are you trying to rename the main program configuration under C:/Program
Files/Macromedia/Dreamweaver 8/Configuration? That would be wrong.
Although I tried that yesterday also and that also worked (but don't do it!)

I'm guessing a permissions issue. You probably don't have Administrator
privileges to your user (which has nothing to do with DW8). In your Control
Panel, click on User Accounts and look at the user that you are using ..
does it say that that person is a Computer Administrator?

I think she renamed the wrong folder, Nancy.

C:/Documents and Settings/yourname/Application
Data/Macromedia/Dreamweaver 8/Configuration

Yes, it is this one I tried to rename.

And nowI've just deleted it from my computer and am afraid to load it back on
my computer. Whatever was happening eventually caused both DW 8 and DWMX2004
to do the same thing. Once I removed DW8 I was back in business. DWMX is
again working flawlessly.

So now I'm afraid to even use DW8, not that I can't delete it again, but I do
have a job to get out and that has put a REAL damper on it.

I have been running into the same problem. I am running on XP home edition and
everytime I try to create an new site under the site management option my
computer freezes. I also tried to change the configuration folder name ( the
one located within Application Data ); however, when I started DW again it
froze and I found that it created another Config. folder in the same location.
I would really appreciate if someone could help me out.

Does anyone have any suggestions??

There is almost nothing in common between these two. I am pretty certain
that your problems are not DW8....

Well, even though there may be nothing in common between the two, by removing
DW8 from my computer, DWMX now works flawlessly again. The problems didn't
start until I loaded DW8 on to my computer. And my computer is more than
adequate to support DW8: OS Win XP, Sony Vaio Pentium 4, 2.00 GB of RAM.

I'd like to use DW8, especially being I paid money for it, but at this point
unless I can find a solution to the problem, I can't use it.

I'm sorry you're having trouble with Dreamweaver 8. Can you try
renaming or deleting this registry key,
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Macromedia\Common\8\Sites?

See this TechNote for more info:

Dreamweaver crashes when performing a task related to site definitions

Hope this helps,

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Macromedia\Common\2004\Sites
Rename the "Sites" key to "SitesOLD" then launch Dreamweaver. This will hide
all of your site definitions from Dreamweaver.
Warning: Editing the Windows Registry incorrectly can cause serious problems
that may require reinstalling your operating system. Macromedia does not
guarantee that problems caused by editing the registry incorrectly can be
resolved. Edit the registry at your own risk.

Now that's definitely scary to do if one does not understand anything about
the registry. That's all I need! :D Ruin my entire windows and have to
uninstall the "world" I have on it and then start over? I've had to do that too
many times.

Right now with DWMX everything is working just fine, so maybe my DW8 is
corrupt or something. Who knows. I just know that it's always MY luck to have
these kinds of problems and not be able to resolve them.
Sigh............:brokenheart;
