| OK, I downloaded Microsoft's new Beta1 Anti-Spyware program and ran it.
It reported no spyware, but, just as I suspected, it looks like it may
be functioning as spyware itself. When I double-clicked my mysql server
icon, I got a message that a strange program was attempting to run, with
two choices - Allow or Don't Allow. I clicked Allow - but it isn't working.
When I try to go into phpMyAdmin, I get a message that it can't connect
to the mysql server. Any tips? Thanks.

| Hi David;
The key to the problem would be... "Microsoft's new Beta1" Beta being the
operative word. I find that most of Microsoft's version one releases would
really be considered a somewhat solid beta. Their beta products are
notoriously buggy with non Microsoft programs. I'd say - dump it and go with
Ad-Aware or the like and let Microsoft sort out their own problems without
messing up your work environment.

| mySQL by default runs as a Windows service. If you go to the control
panel->Administrative Tools->Services make sure mysql has startup set to manual
or automatic. I get that same message you get and for some reason it will
never remember the decision, but by allowing it the server should start up as
long as the service is not disabled.

Actually, I would never have dreamed of trying a Microsoft spyware
program, but it was recommended by Al Sparber. :) Actually, it sounds
like it is a good program overall; I just ran into some sort of bug.
Between AdAware, Spybot and Microsoft Beta, I ought to be able to keep
my computer running for a few more months. ;)
