....can Dreamweaver MX 2004 be installed and run from a USB Jump Drive (Flash Drive) or does the software have to be installed on the computer's fixed hard drive...does anyone know? Thanks,

USB?
I suppose you're on Win, but I assume it's the same as with Mac: DW must
run from a disk with a system. And I doubt that any computer allows an
external disk run through USB (if it's not USB2, that is).
But why not try?

....thanks...won't the external drive works just any other drive when connected
to the computer ? It is assigned a drive letter by windows when you plug it
into a USB port. I'm wondering if DW will run properly if installed onto the
USB jump drive.

you can try it-
I'd have my doubts though. possible issues of speed/throughput accessing the
usb drive, and the possible that the files on the drive may be seen in DOS
8.3 format

why do you want to do this?

I maintain many websites and travel...I think this would allow me to work on
any computer while on the road including internet cafes...just plug in my 1GB
jump drive with the DW software and all site files and I'm in business...

As others have mentioned - you could try it but I think you'll have
problems on several fronts.

First DW places information in the registry file on your hard drive so
if you run the app from another computer the registry settings aren't
available.

Secondly, internet cafes might prevent you from running your own apps
anyway.

If you are travelling alot then I would suggest that you invest in a
laptop computer. The laptop can be configured to your own liking with
webservers, languages etc.

Still use the USB drive as the file storage drive this way the drive
can be swapped between your main computer and laptop anytime or even
plugged into your client's computer. (Yes, I use my USB drive this way
all the time, swapping from work, home and when I'm at a friends place
and need to swap files).

....the software appears to work OK from the location on the jump drive that I copied the entire folder from "program files" to...at least in my first test...

thanks for the input

This is pretty bad @$$. You should try to see if it works in Win 2000/ME/XP as
well. Also, I would also recommend you try doing the same thing with Flash and
Contribute, etc. This might just be enough reason for me to buy a Jump drive
too, if you can lanuch applications that have your own settings already in
place.

....worked just like it was installed on my hard drive when on my own machine
(all my settings intact)...but when I plugged my jump drive into a machine
without the software (DW) previously installed and launched from the jump drive
it asked me to "activate" or choose to use the trial version (no previous
settings intact)...but that's OK because if I was at an internet cafe or
sitting on somebody elses machine I would simply choose to use the trial
version for the work I wanted to do and create a new site from the files
already on my jump drive and walk away when I've completed my work...I tested
this with Fireworks too so am sure Contribute would also behave like this...
I guess this is stretching my license somewhat though ???

....yes, let's sleep on that, maybe it will come !

Even having the software on the jump drive for quick use while on the road without the downloading hassle is great !!

do you really want to have your site ftp info in the Registry of various
Internet Cafe boxes?

....I personally don't use DW's FTP...I FTP with Flash FXP...just what I'm used
to...I'm not clear on the security issue of using the FTP software from my jump
drive via an internet cafe machine...can you explain further???

thanks

you'll want to be careful you don't create any bookmark/shortcut/alias or
whatever to your ftp accounts when using those machines. Nothing that isn't
wiped out when you walk away from it.
