When making an edit to one of the many sites I update, all links in that page
get rewritten to my local drive. I have not set up DW sites for each site I
make an edit in, as it doesn't seem necessary. How do I keep the links from
being rewritten and is it related to 'site setup'?

The problem is that it IS necessary to define the site. That's how DW
keeps track of links. Without a defined site, the links will be
re-written as you experienced.

and- if you don't want to define a site for each place you'll be editing, at
least make one test or fake site definition- then put the files you are
using to this Local Site folder in the same relationship they are in the
remote.
Then dw will make correct relative paths.
