I have a problem with Dreamweaver MX 2004 on a P3 2.4 Ghz, 512 KB RAM, Windows
XP SP2 machine.

Every time I make ANY change on any page, Dreamweaver pauses for 10-30
seconds. The little hourglass appears and after it does whatever it is it is
doing, it lets me have control again.

It's VERY frustrating in that it is difficult to get any work done with the
constant pausing and waiting. I have Cached turned off and refresh local files
off asw well (I have turned them on in the past and it made no difference).

I've always found these posts to be interesting, as grapic programs get larger,
people bump into performance problems. This is similar to what gamers have
been doing for years... don't tell anyone I have a game please, but here's some
advice from that world. Any external networking can cause things to lag. Any
virus software can cause things to lag. If winXP is used, a 1gh processor and
512mb of RAM will end system lags. Video cards under 64mbRAM can be a
possibility. Proper PC hygiene: defragged, spywared and temp/cookie files
cleaned. This sounds silly to some and to some it will seem like a large leap.
But I've found that these are the top 5 issues one will see with programs
performing well. I've found most software minimum requirements to mean that
it will run terrible with minimum requirements. It's quite common to see
software coming out that is way ahead of its time in respect to the majority of
machines out there... ever run a flash7 swf on a 500mh,128mbRAM machine with a
lil 16mb vid card... throw a couple gradients into it and watch it lag out of
control like a flip book drawing... it literally will play at half the fps. I
only mention this because my 1.7gh, 768RAM,128mbVidCard runs DWmx2004 with a
little bit of effort and this is probably the 4th or 5th post I've seen on this
subject. It seems acceptable to sell software that only performs well on some
of the latest machines. I suggest completely disabling that virus program and
trying DW... goodluck, hope this helps somehow.

I dunno. It just screams on my 1GB 3.2GHz system.

For the life of me I cant remember.....I had the same problem at one point.
Lag time I mean. Seems like tha was just before I switched to a new system
though. I was on a 450Mh with 128Mb RAM Pentium2. hahaha I know I know.
I ran into lag problems with that. Not all the time though. Seems like
sometimes it would happen and sometimes it wouldnt. Until my site started
getting bigger...then it started happening more and more. Since I switched
to a Pentium4 2.8Gh with 512DDR RAM I dont have any issue whatsoever. As
Murray says, it screams.

I dont suppose you've done a cold boot lately? Also...how full is your hard
drive? I understand that that may affect things.

Well, after some extensive searching, testing, etc., I discovered the problem.

It turns out I installed the Macromedia Dev Kit 7 and a couple of the
extensions were causing the difficulty. Specifically, Sort Table Headers and
Advanced Table Functions (sp?) were the ones causing all the grief. As soon as
I removed them, Dreamweaver started working like a charm!

Thanks for everyone's help!
