IMHO, when the divs are causing you headache: Use a table.
There's nothing in the world that says you *need* to use divs even if
the advanced code geeks think it's cool. Show some integrity and use the
means that does the job best and in relation to your skills/ambitions.
Regardless of what others might say.
Tables validate, tables will render nicely in all browsers, tables
rarely (if ever) need hacks and conditional statements for God knows how
many browsers do work.
