Backing up MANY site definitions
|
|
| EvanAgee 2005-01-15, 4:17 am |
| Hello all, I work for a website development firm and I have well over 200 site
definitions setup and stored within Dreamweaver. I'm well aware of the method
for backing up single site profiles, but my question is this, is there any way
to backup ALL of your site profiles at once? It isn't even a possibility that I
would back them all up individually, that wouldn't be possible. Anyone else
ran into this problem? Thanks!

| Hmm, I'm not on Windows, I'm on Mac. Thanks anyway though.

You could make a backup copy of the preferences file, which is what contains
the site defs on mac.
HD-->Users-->THE USER YOU ARE LOGGED IN AS WHEN USING
DW-->Library-->Preferences
the file name is
Dreamweaver MX Prefs
or
Dreamweaver MX 2004 Prefs depending on version you're using.
just store a copy of it away.
Note- it's very rare for mac to wipe out the site defs, unlike on windows
where the info is in the Registry file which can get hosed.

| Thanks a lot for your input, I had thought of that and actually backed up the
preferences file. However, when I start DW MX 2004 it doesn't show all of the
sites in the site menu. Is there something I'm missing? We do have system
wide backups that run every evening and we have both onsite and offsite tapes,
so that isn't the issue really, it's mostly an issue of Dreamweaver not loading
the site defs correctly from the backed up prefs file. Thanks! Evan

| to add, i wouldn't rely on just this as a good backup.
If you or the firm don't already have this type of thing, i'd grind thru the
Prefs file and create one.
An excel type spreadsheet file, with client info and ftp info, that is kept
on backup media away from the computer.
or a tree-ware notebook with the same info written down.
A hard drive crash could wipe out our kind of business if there isn't
backups and written info.
If you don't have the details of the ftp info, the ftp password is stored in
a simple encryption in the mac Prefs file (and windows Registry) and can be
reversed.
see here for how to extract the password-
