I have created a navigation bar that will be seen globally through the whole
site.
There are other elements on the pages such as a title banner and the majority
of the content on each page. The Navigation bar will be vertically placed on
the left of each and every page. when a link changes I do not want to go into
each page and update all the links on the Nav Bar. I want this Nav Bar to be a
"hot spot" or editable region, so that anything done to that area will be
linked and changed immediatly on all other pages using that template. I do not
want other the portions of the page touched as each page has unique content.

I have exhausted the DW help files and followed all instructions in there and
online. I cannot seem to get this right. i feel i am missing something here
although the concept is very simple. i get errors like: "unresolved" dialog
boxes, and I have to go in an select which portion of the template page i want
to match up to this html page and half the time it doesn't even map to the
portion i specify anyway. When i do a chk on the syntax it tells me that the
template syntax is correct. ?? What am i missing and why is this not as
striaght forward as it should be?

any ideas?

You're starting on the wrong foot. Editable region content is NOT
propagated. It's only changes to the Template's non-editable regions that
is broadcast to all child pages. Otherwise, there'd be no way to have pages
with unique content.

You are missing the basic concept of how templates work. Show me your page
and I'll tell you how to get back on track.
