I am looking for any pointers on how to setup be development box (dreamweaver
running in windows xp) to access my production webserver (solaris 9 running
apache webserver and php4). I want to be able to use dreamweaver to access the
unix machine and develop the pages remotely for the unix webserver?

Please any ideas, or pages, or books you could point me to would be helpful
thanks.

Most of us do this as a matter of routine. At least according to
Netcraft[1], most webservers are Apache running on some variety of *nix.
Define your site on your local computer; develop the pages; FTP them to
the server.

When I setup my mysql connection. And I try to connect to the mysql databse on
my remote server it says "an unidentified has occured"

Do you have any idea of what going on here. The server model I am using is
PHP_MYSQL

Without knowing how your server's set up:
- Is mysql running?
- Can you connect to mysql using an admin tool like PHPMyAdmin
(http://www.phpmyadmin.net/home_page/)?
- You probably need to put in 'localhost' (without the '') as the server
name in the connection dialog
- Are you using the correct username and password /for MySQL/? (They may
well be different from the UID and password for FTP.)
- Have you defined a testing server? Usually what I do is define the
testing server to point to the production server.

I determined that mysql is running on the remote machine.
The remote machine is running Solaris 9. I used this script called xampp to
install the Apache web server, mysql, and PHP on the machine.

I was able to set up a site and testing server in dreamweaver and tested it;
it resulted in a successful connection. Now when I goto setup the mysql server
connection in dreamweaver I get the following error:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--

HTTP Error Code 404 File not Found. Here are some possible reasons for the
problem:

1)There is no testing server running on the server machine.
2)The testing server specified for this site does not map to the / url. Verify
that the url prefix maps to the root of the site.

Thanks

What do you have in the site setup window for addresses for the main
server and the testing server?

In the Testing Server Setup window under URL Prefix: I have the url of my site
ie "http://mysite.students.edu" and under local info under the HTTP Address:
"http://mysite.students.edu" (so I put the same thing)

Joe,

Everything is working correctly now. Here is what I had to do. I had to
install the update for 6.1 then I had to remove the phakt extentions that
allowed me to use php4 ( i really didn't want to do that ) and then when
specifying the mysql Server in the mysql Connection dialog box I had to enter
localhost. Additionally I had to give rights to that database that I wanted to
use to the user account that I specified.

All is working now thanks for your advice/ideas/help. Do you know why I can't
use php4 (phakt extentions in dreamweaver now?
Or if they have a fix for this?
