Defining my site jacks my design view!

| System Background: I'm running Dreamweaver MX 2004 on a Mac with OSX. The
folder system on my local drive exactly matches the folders on my remote
server.
If I set up my ftp account info with the root directory and default images
directory defined, my design view of my page layout goes completely haywire. I
just get a solid gray background with a few haphazardly placed grayed out image
boxes in no particular order, and doesn't even display gray boxes for all of
the images that I know are on the page. The html or code view of the page looks
just fine. It's only the design view that has a problem. If I delete the ftp
account, the design view returns to looking the way it should as I layed it out
with all my images visible and appropriately placed. I've been using
Dreamweaver since it came out years ago and never had this problem before. This
particular installation worked just fine since January 2004 until Monday of
this week. I've looked for any view options I may have accidentally turned on
or off and can't find anything wrong. I've even re-installed the app to no
avail. It a pain in the rump to have to set up and delete my ftp info everytime
I want to make an edit to my site. Anybody have any ideas or experience
something similar? Thanks for your help.

| Your remote site definition cannot affect your local file display.
Please tell me step by step how your sites are defined and what you do to
make this happen so that I can try to reproduce things.
