Author One link for two targets

Hi,

Is it possible to make a link pointing two files so, if the one is missing
(i.e. the path is wrong) the other to be displayed?

then make custom variants of the files for each of them, so that their HD
file is linked to their CD on their machine.

I'm not sure I understand what do you mean by "custom variants".
Do you mean two links each pointing to different location?

That was my first idea, but then I decided to post here if there is
something else... A javascript perhaps...
