Bug with Library links to folder
|

| I can't be sure if its a bug, but its certainly not something to wich for. I
looked at
http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/w...?catid=189&thre
adid=831221&highlight_key=y&keyword1=library, but didn't find info on my
particular problem.
I have a library item that is a menu. My link clearly stipulates that they are
targeted to folders inside my hierarchy <a href="../mainfolder/subfolder1/"> in
a structure like this:
..localsite/mainfolder/subfolder1/
..localsite/mainfolder/subfolder2/
..localsite/mainfolder/subfolder3/
..localsite/library/
However, when the library item is being applied to all pages containing it,
the adress get re-writen WITHOUT the final slash <a
href="../mainfolder/subfolder1 ">.
For reasons of internal politic and client/service provider relationships I
will not explain here (pros will understand why I'm so carefull with this), I
must be able to correct this in order to solve a problem (or prove it's not my
responsability). The fact that all links are aimed to unidentified entities
with the name of the folders, it seems that it creates errors.
So, I must find a way to tell Dreamweaver MX to keep the final slashes in the
menu library item. I have version 6.1 of MX. I don't want to have to force the
default.htm to every link, kinda defeat the utility of the "default folder
document".

| I don't think you'll be able to achieve this. Sorry....

| Murray *TMM*, could you extrapolate on that "I don't think you'll be able to
achieve this." A quick answer will suffice.
Isn't the proper way to write an URL to a folder to add a final slash? I
thought it was. I'm really surprised that MM didn't take that into
consideration. Writting URL to folder is a common practice, the "library
application method" should have been able to do this correctly.
Anyway, I'm here to find a solution. Does Dreamweaver MX 2004 do this
correctly. If so, I switch today. If not, I think I'll add the default.htm at
the end, that way Dreamweaver MX will have to keep it when it updates the pages.

| I guess what I'm saying is that I do not know a way to 're-educate' the
Library engine to not drop that trailing space. Further, I have not seen a
method to do this posted here, or in Technotes on the MM site. But it's
possible I have overlooked something.
Other than the principle of the thing, is that a reason you don't want to go
ahead and put the default.htm on the backside of those links?

| Yes. I think you have summarized it well. Did you make a request to the
development team for this?

| Other than the principle of the thing, is that a reason you don't want to go

It was for the principal of things and because of esthetic. It's nicer, and
somewhat better for usability purpose, to see as URL :
http://www.acme.com/history/ than http://www.acme.com/history/default.htm.
Users have a less intuitive understanding of the URL at first look. Not a big
deal, but it would have been better. Thanks for your time.
Final answer
With library items, anchor links to folder get re-writen everytime it's
applicated to a page, but there will be no trailing slashs. So if a vital
system (server, proxy, anything) doesn't recognise an URL not ending by a slash
(/) {understanding it's a folder} or by a valid web file extension {.htm,
..html, .php, .asp, etc...), YOU CANNOT USE LIBRARY ITEMS.
Solution: in a library item, always use complete URL, that is with web file
name and extension.
never: ../bogus/
always: ../bogus/default.htm
