I want to set my height of my left nav bar to 100%, so it adjusts
automatically with the content, but it doesnt work. Instead im having to use
pixel value whihc is fine but it creates unneccesary scroll bar sometimes...

am i making sense? here is the page

I want the left nav content bar to extent as far as neccessary when I add text
to the content side. seems easy enough.

Yep. Surround the entire page in a wrapper div with height set to auto. Then,
set the height of your left nav div to 100%. Oh, and you'll want the left nav
picture in the same div as the left nav bar, else the 100% will extend further
down than you intend. The wrapper should stretch to fit the content div, and
when the wrapper stretches, the left nav will expand to 100% of the wrapper's
height.

Haven't done this personally, though, but it makes sense in theory, right? ;)

Why not use css to declare the background image for the left_nav and repeat
it y?
You also haven't specified a background colour for your content aea - I'm
seeing a hot pink :-)
