Why do I have to write this:
background:#333 url(../i/abcbg.gif);
instead of this:
and not background:#333 url(/i/abcbg.gif);
in DWMX2004 for the image to show in dreramweaver and when I preview it (F12)

Because one is document relative and one is root relative. Have you written
your url in the url field of the site definition?

I mean in the site definition. Open the site definition and look at the
"HTTP Address" field. It's under the "Local Info" section, which is the
first one you see when you open the site definition.

Did you read the technote?
