Author Fireworks menus

I recently inherited a site with menues created in Fireworks. Can you tell me
if it is possible to edit these menus without the Fireworks software. I might
want to change the text or even add a menu item. I would hate to purchase the
software just to make small changes if I don't need to.
Thanks,
Kelly

You could only do it if you were experienced with manually coding js. Of
course if you were that, you would know right away that you needed to rip
those menus out and throw them away.

Are you using DW? If so you have a perfect alternative - do them manually.
Use the methods taught here and you'll not be sorry -

http://www.projectseven.com/tutoria...menus/index.htm

or

http://www.projectseven.com/tutoria..._hide/index.htm

and here's an example you can analyze -

No, I'm not experienced with coding js. I take it you are not crazy about
Fireworks. I've done simple menus before like these:

http://www.hedinenv.com/assessment.htm

The menus on the site created with fireworks are a little more complicated.
Can you take a look and give me your recommendation?

I love Fireworks. I just think it needs to lose these menus!

If you can do the 'simple' ones, you can do these. There's no difference
except another submenu layer, and a larger closer layer.

See the examples here -

Before -

http://www.great-web-sights.com/tes...CCR/oldnav.html
(DW/FW pop-ups)

After -

http://www.great-web-sights.com/tes...CCR/newnav.html
(all PVII and CSS)

Kelly,

It's difficult to follow the thread since you didn't respond to the Group
and there is no telling completely what you are referencing.

It isn't that people don't like Fireworks, it is that they don't like
Fireworks' menus. It uses javascript, which by most accounts severly hampers
your ability to be spidered by search engines. Also, the code is bulky and
adds to the download time. Recently, I read an article where the author
claimed that a Fireworks menu bulked up the site by 40K. Considering most
designers aim for a site that is in the 40-50K range (so as to be dialup
friendly) you can understand why so many give it a thumbs down.

Do you have an opinion on the menu packs they sell at PVII? (Menu Magic I/II etc.) I'm all for making this easier but is it worth it and do you have control?
Thanks,
Kelly

Outstanding. You'll learn more working with them than with just about any
other tool.

Also spend the time to learn how to do it manually, too, using the tutorials
there at PVII.
