Silly question I know,

When I create a page locally in Dreamweaver everything works fine, But once i
upload it I have to recode all my links, they are pointing to my local drive.
Am i doing something wrong when I set site up or is this normal. I know this is
simple question and prolly has simple answer So someone tell me do I have to
recode all links to point to server or is it the way I am structuring the site.

If I had a dime for every question I've asked in this forum that I thought
was silly, I'd... well, I'd have more money, for sure.

Bill:

Wrong answer, bud. Read the question again.

The problem is that the links are file:/// links. This can happen when -

1. A file from outside the local site is linked, and the file is not then
copied within the site.
2. A page is created and linked, and then saved outside the local site.
3. You are working with a local site that is actually on a network remote
shared drive, and there was a network glitch during creation of the page.

I can't think of any other way to get such links.

The solution is to remake the links and not make either of those mistakes.

this usually happens to me when i add a link or image before i've saved the
document.

Dreamweaver then doesnt know where the document is saved (because it isnt) and
hterefore cant link it relatively, so it links it absolutely to where the image
is stored on your local hard drive.

simple solution save your page just after you create it.

well it works for me anyway.

It makes no difference when you save the page, either immediately after
creation or not until the entire page is built. DW is capable of managing
those links properly when the page is saved into the current defined site.

So the ting to remember then is to create site with all images contained within site and if you link to graphics outside the site you will have to change them manually ?????????
Murray *TMM*

All linked files must be within the current site *unless* they are files
that are external to your computer, and you are linking them with an
absolute reference, e.g.,

<a href=''http://www.mydomain.com/foo.html''>

If you link to a file outside your defined site, Dreamweaver will ask
you if you want to copy it into the site. If you click Yes, it will
take care of that for you.

That is what I thought , If i tell it to copy the file to the site, then it
should work no problems but this is where I am having problems I am telling
dreamweaver to copy the file to my site when i link to it then i upload the
entire site images and code and the images do not appear

they have the link :

../images/oct/odd-05.gif

but do not appear when i preview the site in IE or Netscape

I have tried taking those dots off the front that did not help

the only way i get it to work is if I go in and redo all the links to :

http://www.mydomain.com/images/oct/odd-05.gif

What am I doing wrong

Create a new page, insert that image, and copy the code for the <img> tag
and paste it into a reply, please.
