Stacking and displaying layers

Hi, I'm back ... and on to the route maps. I've created the route GIFs and
the <div> absolutes. But, even with the PVII AutoLayer behaviors, I can't get
the individual routes to display. Example. The route map from Aberdeen should
display if you onMouseOver the imagemap for Aberdeen. I know it's there. I
can see it when the page loads, but it stays hidden. It's got to be the order
in which I have things in the CSS. Help.

| You have the layers positioned with no z-index at all. Assign a z-index to
lift them above the page - say 10.
Also, hide each of the route lines using the Property inspector. That way,
you won't see them as they load.

No Joy! The layers are hidden and the mouseover is working (see the text in
the statusline), but the layer is not appearing. Could it be that the PVII
behaviors do not work on hotspots in an image map? If so, will a dedicated
javascript work? (I realize that the PVII behaviors are javascript)

| This page is behaving in a very strange way. Can you zip it and its images
and email it to me?

| In fact we did. With much help from Murray and switching from PVII behaviors
to the Show/Hide layers behavior, I was able to display the routes and pop the
directions. I have to move the map over a bit because it hides parts of the
menus, but that's small potatoes. Haveagander.

| Murray *TMM* 2004-08-16, 7:15 pm |
| Note in clarification - this had nothing to do with the PVII behaviors. It
was just simpler for me to use the show-hide behavior at the time....
But Karl - you missed the fact that I further optimized that underlying
map.gif so that it was less that 20K (map2.gif in my returned file). I
would use that instead of the 44K image you are using now.

| You didn't ask, but I can't help making one comment. Consider using
thinner lines to indicate the four routes. The thick lines you are now
using obscure information like route number, the names of towns along
the way and so on. These are the landmarks I look for when following
directions to some place I haven't been before.

| comment noted and appreciated for its intent. Were that the primary method of
passing out the info, I would have used a 50% transparent and someone thinner
line. However, in this instance, the real directions are in the onClick()
popups. I'm going to add a map segment to that page in a css media:print style
and a Print these directions button. So far, I'm miles beyond what the site
owner asked for in this page. I'm just having too much fun learning and doing.

| don Carlos 2004-08-16, 7:15 pm |
| [in reverse order] thanks for the heads up on print. I sure hate to clutter
that simple window with a toolbar. I may just leave well enough alone (or at
least ask the site owner).
As for the file not found, yours is the first to pull that. I've tested on as
many as 6 different machines and browsers from NS6, IE5 and IE6. Were you on a
Mac? (I don't know anyone with a mac that I can ask to surf out there.) I
don't dispute your observation (that would be, at the least rude), but I think
I DID use a simple onClick="window.close()" I'll have to check the code when I
get home. That's a FW rollover button (as if you didn't know that). I may
drop back to a single graphic for simplicity sake. Don't want no stinkin 404s.
| |
| Murray *TMM* 2004-08-16, 7:15 pm |
| Karl:
Note -
1. When I click the close button in the pop-up windows, I get a page not
found message. In addition to containing 10X more code than needed, they
also don't contain valid code!
<td><a href="onclick=window.close" target="_top"
onClick="MM_nbGroup('down','navbar1','Br_CloseWindow_r1_c1','images/nav/Br_CloseWindow_r1_c1_f3.gif',1);"
onMouseOver="MM_nbGroup('over','Br_CloseWindow_r1_c1','images/nav/Br_CloseWindow_r1_c1_f2.gif','images/nav/Br_CloseWindow_r1_c1_f3.gif',1);
onclick = window.close" onMouseOut="MM_nbGroup('out');">
This should be -
<td><a href="onclick=window.close()">
2. A 'print' triggered programatically will fail on Mac/IE5x. Your best
bet would be to just include a menu bar on these windows and allow people to
print as they have for the last 20 years! 8)

| I'll slap my wrist for the bad function language (the missing parens). The, as
you call it, hinky detritus is the stuff from the FW rollover button. I ain't
smart enough to write that stuff. I'll clean it out and see if it still runs
(and I'm bettin it does.) I'll have to ask my brother in MN to point his Mac
at it and see how it plays in Austin MN (home of the original SPAM)

Nope - IE6/XPPro SP2.
Look at the code I pasted. You forgot the parens. Then you added alot of
scruffy camouflage and hinky detritus.

| Don't bother asking anyone. I can tell you it looks and works fine Mac/IE5
and Safari 1.0.2.
