sites defs backed up just in case.
all extensions disabled.
when run the installer get a box saying dreamweaver is not in the foledr
specified, but it is. here's the message:
http://www.mpg.net.nz/dwupdater.gif
here's the location of dw
"C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Dreamweaver MX\Dreamweaver.exe"
any clues anyone?
| |
|
| go to dreamweaver.exe in the file system.
right-click on it, and choose Properties.
in the Properties box, look for the the Version or Build number.
it's in the format of 6.x.xxxx
There's two possibles.
The updater has already run successfully once, and it's already updated to
6.1.xxxxx If dreamweaver is 6.1, the updater won't run, because it is not
dreamweaver 6.0
Or- the version you have is from before Dreamweaver was released- a version
that's been floating around Kazaa and places. The updater won't update that
version, because it is not dreamweaver 6.0

it's neither of these. it says 6.0 on the file version.

what are the last four numbers?
6.0.xxxx
If it's 6.0.1722 the updater should work.
If it's a higher number than 1722, it's a localized language version- get
the correct updater for that language.
If it's 6.1.1842 then the updater has run.
If it's 6.0.1714 please get a clue. Get a legal copy of Dreamweaver MX and
the updater will install.

| I wasn't going to reply to this but it's been bugging me all day and i can't
let it go. Maybe I'm just a little too sensitive these days.
I checked the last four numbers and they are 1714, which you infer is an
illegal copy. You further assert, somewhat inconsiderately, that I am
clueless.
I resent that assertion, immensely.
The laptop I use is my sister's who passed away a few months back. I used to
borrow it all the time, so it found it's way to me when she was taken from
us. i assumed licences were granted to the compute and not the person, so I
could keep using her programs, on her computer.
I am ignorant of the legitimacy of the programs she has on this laptop. It's
doesn't mean I'm clueless, as your negative 'get a clue' comment would
suggest.
As this is a public forum, and I would be hard pressed to draw any
connection you may have with MM, apart from an asserted knowledge of a few
version codes. Perhaps you can outline if you have any official capacity
within MM and if so, what you, in that capacity suggest I do about this
bootleg copy I have?
Whether you are or are not indeed an MM representative, may I suggest you
ask yourself whether you would like being spoken to in the manner in which
you are intending to respond to a post, before you post it. I do value your
and everyone's advice, but like allot of things in life, it's all about the
delivery.
Like i said, maybe I'm a bit too sensitive these days.

It is an illegal copy. Build 1714 was a pre-release beta that was
never released to the public. There have been some cracked copies of
that version floating around on Kazza. So the truth of the matter is
that it was a version of the product that was deemed to buggy to
release and cannot be legally used. Additionally, since it was not
obtained from Macromedia, there is also the possibility that there is
a Trojan or other malicious code embedded in it.

| ok, I'll stop using it and wait for the next version of DWMx to come out - I
asked a while ago about buying the upgrade to mx2004 and a few people
suggested to wait as something might be just a few months away.
As the sites I am building are just for my learning, nothing commercial,
there's no pressure to continue.
My sister had cold fusion mx also, which I have been learning. I suppose
that's ripped off to? the version is: 6,0,0,48097
Do you know if it's safe to keep using?
I have bought the books from rob brooks-bilson and would hate to have to
stop learning as it's very interesting.
There is no way I can afford, i think, DW and CF together if I have to buy
them both.
i might go learn PHP and just buy DW if CF version number above is illegal.
Tks

Don't listen to people who say this. Those who know when the release is
scheduled (if there is even a schedule) cannot say because of NDA
restrictions. Those who say, therefore, cannot know. If it were me, and if
I wanted to continue developing sites and studying, I'd upgrade right away.

Honestly, I don't know. But 1714 is definitely illegal.

I would not, but that's me.

Why do you need to buy CF? DW gives you everything you need.

| Hi Murray,
Point taken.
No-one has said a release is due out on such and such a date. But many have
read between a few lines and suggested one might be happening, which could
or could not be true. Given the two paths - DW like all good companies
constantly wanting to bring out the latest and greatest products, and me
being nowhere near the sharp end of the learning process so in no real hurry
at this point - I think I'll keep reading my books, visiting this forum(by
far the best learning tool for me I've found) and playing/learning locally
with one eye on any future DW release/s, whenever that may happen.
Will also give me more time to save the $ :-) (does DW have any special
'grant a wish' promotions going ...lol.. i mean, they can give me free
product and I'll let them hang as much of their marketing budget on me as
they see fit ;-)
Actually, never thought I'de get into the books, given the extensive online
resources available but it actually make a pleasant change from the computer
screen, if you know what I mean.
Tks for your help.

This does not take a crystal ball. A release is always happening.

| if it hasn't been mentioned, Dreamweaver 2004 30 day trial works for 30
days. After that time, it won't launch anymore. It's not like CF Server,
which reverts to a single user developers license if no serial is entered.
it's up to you if you want to continue using the version of dreamweaver you
wound up with- bear in mind that the 6.1 updater won't install into it, and
it has glitches and problems that can cause small or huge errors, even the
loss of code. I think Library items was one very touchy thing that hadn't
been fixed at that stage yet. (the 1714 was maybe a month from before it was
released as final i think) But you could use it as a learning tool to get
familiar with dreamweaver. I wouldn't use it on a production basis- due to
stability problems and that it could barf and loose code off pages. Whether
it should be used at all is a different matter.
When i made my first reply- I had no idea how you had obtained dreamweaver.
