Hi,

I am a designer building a website with an online shopping facility. It will
start off small, but has the potential to sell a wide range of products.

What is the best way for me to approach this shopping facility...... a third
party, a backend database???

I have limited scripting knowledge, and am desperately needing sound advice.

Thanks a lot

I have used CharonCart V3 to great effect, and it is only ?25, but as designer
you may find using a database etc to run the site a bit daunting, so you might
wish to take a look at pre-built options, such if your hosting company provides
a template based shopping cart, which many do these days, or do a Google search
for pre-built shopping carts, which you populate via the browser. ( a quick
search for shopping+cart brought back a number of sites)

Alternatively you could use a developer to implement the shopping cart to your
designed site, this is how I normally work, adding in the coding/shopping cart
to a site designed by someone else.

What server models are supported by your site's host?

I think the best way would be to start off simple. Use a 3rd party ecommerce
solution like PayPal, or Kagi.

Hi.

I would suggest reading up on it a bit more. I had the same problem a few
years ago.
Maybe with a bit more investigation and effort you could crack this problem.
I don't really think it's that hard. If you need any more sage advice please
don't hesitate
to ask.

Cheers.

Thanks for your advice.
Out of interest, how much would you charge to implement a site designed by myself?

Hi AESS1981.... what an unusual name! :-)

Anyway, I wrote a three part article on developing e-commerce applications
for Macromedia DevNet that you may find helpful. Here is the link to the
first one, links to the second and third are in the first paragraph of the
first article.

Hope you find this helpful.

You could have a lot of choices depending on your server model.
asp, php, cf ??

You may also get away with using a freebie shopping cart like:
www.mals-e.com But this be ok for a small cart, but if you are going to be
upgrading to a lot of products, you may need an out of the box solution.

If you already have a design, you can set up your products page and then
link them for purchase by using Paypal. Look at the paypal site
www.paypal.com and look at the merchant tools for more information.
