| Hello. Is there any way to lock a layer into a specific position on a page? I
have a layer that shifts around, depending on the size of the browser window.
In design view, the layers appears fine, but in the browser view it gets moved
around.
Any help will be appreciated!

| Layers don't shift. But other page content does.
What's the URI to your page?

| Do you want to "lock it" relative to a specific element on the page, like an
image? It sounds like a job for the Snap Layers extension --

| Here's the test page:
http://www.techexchange.com/welcome2.html
When I resize the browser, the layer shifts on the screen.
Ultimately, the goal is to 'hide' relevant text behind the flash element so
that spiders crawling the site will pick up the text. The Flash file sits on
top of the layer.

Browser viewport = 720 pixels wide
Layer left margin = ~242 pixels from left edge
Browser viewport = 1280 wide (maximized)
Layer left margin = ~242 pixels from left edge
QED
SNAP Layer (http://www.projectseven.com/) would let you anchor the layer to
the table's content as it moves (thereby dragging that layer with it).
But I gotta say, your idea is a poor one -

You should spend you effort on optimizing the page's contextual and
syntactical markup, and leaving such 'cheats' off....

| It's actually nested within a table cell, but when viewed in the browser, it
floats depending on the size of the browser window. I included the link to the
test page in a previous post if you care to take a look at it.
Thank you,

| Yes - I missed that. Don't put absolutely positioned elements directly in
table cells. Browsers become very confused by where the positioning is
calculated from.

| If I were your competitor, and I discovered you were using that method to
achieve a higher SE rank than I, I would complain the the SE's. And I'd
win. You run the risk of not just losing your ranking, but also being
banned from the index when you use the same kind of chicanery used by porn
sites to achieve inordinately high rankings.
This is a foolish risk for anyone to take, particularly when there are
other, solid methods available for optimizing a site's pages (in my opinion,
of course).

| SNAP works beautifully.
A properly applied snap will show calls to snap the layer onLoad and
onResize in the body tag of the page.
Wanna show me your modified page?

| Thanks for the input. I didn't realize this was such a 'no-no'. I will run the
information by my supervisor and see if he still wishes to pursue the matter.
I tried using the 'snap' extension and can't get it to work either. I'm ready
to give up on this exercise!
