Author Frame like site?

First off I am a total newbie at dreamweaver, I took a class in high school,
and am fairly familar with the interface. My question is how would I make a
site that would be like frames. I know that frames are no longer used but how
would I achieve the desired results using a more modern technique. I ask
because I have made a navagation bar and want that to always remain and then
open up seperate pages below it. Any assistance would be grand.
Thanks

Frames are still good...just not the best option a lot of the time.

Then you need to use frames.

But do you really need the navigation bar to do this? Consider some other
options...namely server side includes to include the same navigation on each
individual page.

That desired result is not easily achievable without using frames, and is
not (in my opinion) a worthy enough goal to cause one to use frames.

Just make flat pages that link to each other. It's easy, it's simple, and
it's trouble free.

Frames aren't a great idea, particularly if you're inexperienced, but they
are still occasionally used. (But it's a bad habit to get into...)

The W3C uses such a system on their CSS pages:

why not use frames?
It could be the perfect solution for what you're trying to do.

Sites that reload the entire page each time you click on one of the menu
options, only to show the exact same menu on the next page, just seem
like a waste of bandwidth and loading time.
Having only the bottom frame reload is also visually more elegant.

Frames are 100% ligit and valid. There was a rumor saying that frames
are bad for search engines, but it's not true.
So, really, nothing wrong with frames.

There's lots of reasons.

Frames sometimes are the perfect solution. But not usually.

The bandwidth would be minimal, as would loading time.

You could consider these drawbacks, but they certainly don't outweight the
drawbacks often associated with frames.

Yep. Just not always appropriate from a usability standpoint.

Frames, themselves, aren't a hurdle for search engines. But when they're
implemented poorly (as they often are) then they are a hurdle.

> So, really, nothing wrong with frames.

Plenty wrong with frames:

- akward for screen readers, PDAs, etc.
- often hard to bookmark
- require extra javascript to prevent loading orphan pages without
navigation
- can be difficult to print for some people
- can contribute to 'lazy' development where menus aren't contextually
highlighted

Again, that doesn't mean they should never be used...just that there are
times when they are good, and times when they are a hindrance.
