Any help? detecting if site #2 is up from site #1

Hello all!

Thanks for reading. I have a seemingly simple problem:

I need to be able to have a page on one site redirect to a page on another
site if the other site is up and running. How do I go about detecting if site
#2 is up and running? Is there a way to ping the other site and determine if it
is active? I can't use the standard IIS "If page is not found redirect to..."
because it is in use already. Ideally I'd like to set up a test page on server
#2 and ping it from site #1.

Any and all ideas greatly appreciated.
