Author Adding a Windows Media Player File to a page

I am trying to post a few video files for a friend of mine and they are .wmv
files. I am on a Mac with Dreamweaver MX and I can't get Dreamweaver to
recognize the movie. I ca see the movies in the Site Window but not the
Library.

What do I need to get a .wmv into a DW page on a Mac? I have gotten Quicktime
movies to work just fine so I have a little idea what I am doing. :)

You could also use QuickTime to convert the file to MPEG-4 format.
MPEG-4 can be viewed on any platform.

But, if you really wnanna use Windows Media file then take a look at the
Media Tab in the Commons section on the Insert Bar. You'll see Applet
and ActiveX, both can be used (I think).

Thanks guys. I did use the insert media tab and all appears well. The only
problem is that both explorer and Safari crash when I try to load that page.
There are four video files. Three on the left are .wmv and the one on the
right is an MPEG 4. I can't play the MPEG 4 on either of my Macs, both with
Quicktime 6.5. Also, the page will only display for about five seconds, then
both applications quit? Here is the page:

Hi.

I don?t think that publishing the movies as flash-movies is a good idea since
there?s no syncronization between video and audio in that format.

Granted, if such synchronization is not neccessary then OK, if you need the
sync stay clear of flash-movies!

WB,

thanks for the pointer -- as a Macromedia newbie, I wasn't aware of the
(non)sync issue. (Good to be aware of that particular limitation.)

Some sites offer a choice of either Quicktime or Windows Media Player. I
guess there's also Real Player . . .

MPEG-4 can not be viewed in any browser unless you have some plug in.
And I am not aware of any MPREG-4 plug-in for Safari or Explorer. When i
post MPEG-4 (which is a lot) video I instruct the browser to Right Click
and download the video and then play it using QuickTime or some other
MPEG-4 player.

I never stream video so I'm not sure about that.

Ataully the Flash format isn't so bad now. I've used Sorenson to convert
from QuickTime to Flash with decent results. But you should use the
highbandwidth setting in Sorenson.

I removed the .mp4 file from the page as I can't get it to playback on either a
Mac or a PC and the page would crash using Safari or Explorer. The file is
still visible at http://www.rk-productions.net/Assets/Movies. It is called
Roatan.mp4.

Also, the .wmv files aren't playing on my PC at work. If someone can load the
following page and let me know if the movies play, that would be great.

Thanks.

It crashes with Netscape too. You have the video set to start on page
load. If so that is a bad idea. Cause it will take a while to load.
Trying posting a page with one video up... and then maybe we can see the
code.

Use a link to the MPEG-4 video. And instruct the browers to "Save Link
As" (just right click or option click on mac). Once saved, just double
clicking the mp4 file will launch your viewer. If you don't have one use
QuickTime.

How large are the Windows Media Files? Can you post a separate page with
a link to one of them?

For each of the .wmv files, I added the parameter "Autoplay False" but
obviously that isn't working. It worked okay with Quicktime movies I have on
another page, http://www.rk-productions.net/previewpage.html, but not with
these .wmv files nor the .mp4 file. You can view all of them here:

http://www.rk-productions.net/Assets/Movies

They are Mach1, Mach2, Mach3 and Roatan. They range in size from 2 megs to .4
megs.

Thanks for all the help.

BTW, would upgrading to Studio MX 2004 help out? That is $400 I would rather
not spend right now but if it will help . . .
