Author Newbie here - upgrade/training?

I took an online class (once a week for 4 weeks) to learn the basics of
Dreamweaver along with the book "Training from the Source". I am basically an
author of our online help with RoboHelp, but then started this.

I redesigned our old web site (created in NetObjects F}sion) with Dreamweaver
MX (not 2004, but the older version). It turned out OK, but we would like to
continue to enhance it.

I need to get advice on a couple of things
- should we upgrade to DW MX2004?
- any suggestions for more training/classes? (I am still a beginner, but would
like to advance in both the technical terms/requirements and the development of
the web sites)

I had a few problems with DW MX during my class and the development of our sita
- I can't get the layers to work in my template at all (not all that
important, but I would like to be able to use on a page or two)
- I kept getting errors when I set my project to automatically save to the
network each save, so I just turned that off and save my project and copy to
the network site when finished with updates,

Any suggestions would be welcome.

In my opinion, yes, definitely. DMX2004's support for CSS is so far beyond
DMX that it's hard to quantify it. If you are using CSS for layout methods
at all, this will be a vast improvement for you.

I would get a good book. You may find the Foundations, and CSS Masters
ebooks from the PVII site to be very helpful (and a good value, too) -

This is not right. What was happening when you tried?

I never use this feature - it's too dangerous for me.

learn CSS they are very powerful and its the way the internet is headed. With
CSS you can change one page and have it change all your pages. If you take
another class take one that explains designing a site with CSS. Also if there
is a chance of using a database with your site (for customers, products, userid
& passwords, search feature) then take a class that teaches PHP & MySQL, or ASP
and SQL Server.
I dont think you NEED to update your dreamweaver to 2004.

Just my opinions,

Matt

If you are going to start using CSS, you would be well advised to upgrade.
DMX cannot handle CSS layout at all. DMX2004 can.
