Author Importing Documents from Wordpad

We recently made the switch from MS Frontpage to DreamweaverMX at my workplace,
which is great for our live website, but less great for developing content.

Normally, we're given an enormous MS Word document with all of the "content"
to a course, and it's my job to turn that into HTML. We used FrontPage for
awhile, but there were tons of issues, like unnecessary code, a lack of
automatic line breaking, and a bunch of other stuff.

Unfortunately, when I try to cut and paste these pages from Word into
Dreamweaver, it tells me that the page is too big (it dosen't SEEM that big).
If I try to cut and paste from Wordpad, for some reason Dreamweaver loses all
of the italics and boldface tags, so I have to go back and add all of them.

Is there some way to easily and quickly cut and paste from Word into
Dreamweaver that I don't know about or from Wordpad to Dreamweaver without
losing all of the emphasis-based tags?

Thanks ahead of time and have a great afternoon.

File>>>Import>>>Word HTML

Now I have never used that but I don't see why it wouldnt work. If you open
MS Word you can save the file as Web Page. Then just import it into
Dreamweaver and it should give you options for rules you want to set on the
import.

Matt

ps. Just tested it and it seems to work fine.

I have and it doesn't work, not with large files.
I get the error message Levinson mentions.
I increased my RAM to 1 gig, which seemed to help a bit, but not enough.

My private solution: I layout and structure the page in DW, and paste the
Word-content into Homesite (which comes with DW MX 2004). In Homesite I
edit whatever is necessary, and then save the result in the DW page.

Not ideal, but no crashes nor problems with Search & Replace.
One the page is uploaded, it seems fine.

Joshua:

One of the BIG improvements made in going from DMX to DMX2004 was improving
the handling of Word documents. Is it conceivable you could upgrade to that
version?

If not, please tell me which version you are using - is it DMX6.0 or DMX6.1?

I am actually using DreamweaverMX 2004. My apologies for not clarifying
before. I've tried a few things, such as pasting it into Frontpage and THEN
Dreamweaver, but that doesn't really help, as Frontpage has already screwed it
up by then.

Essentially, I'm trying to take something out of Word, paste it somewhere, and
then paste it into Dreamweaver without losing the bold and italics, because
with what I'm doing, there are lots of them and it's a pain to go back and
change them.

I appreciate all the help from everybody.

Also, I'm not sure how I get Homesite? Should it have been installed when
DreamweaverMX 2004 was installed? If so, I may not have it -- but I could
probably install it again from the CD? Thanks again everybody.

Yes. It should be on the CD.
My lay-woman's theory: because HomeSite can do far less then DW can, it
handles these large Word doc's better. Do use the code-sweeper and all
that. Open your DW file in Homesite, paste in your Word text, sweep, clean
and so on and save again.

Have you got sufficient RAM-memory?

The 'Wordpad' is only in the header.
The message clearly talks about MS Word.

In theory perhaps, not in practice - not in *my* practice, I should perhaps
say. I get the warning about it being too much on files less than 150k. If
I ignore the warning, DW hangs or becomes too slow to handle.
Even with 1 gig Ram.

Here's the whole deal:

I work for a University, and I'm responsible for taking super-long Word
documents and breaking them up into HTML files that we can upload into a course
content site using WebCT.

We used to use Frontpage, but it sucked. It was always adding code
everywhere, and it was just a huge mess. So we switched to Dreamweaver. The
problem is, when I try to paste directly from Word, even using small snippets
(less than a full page), it says that it would take too long, and the computer
hangs or whatever.

If I attempt to cut and paste from Word into Wordpad, and THEN into
Dreamweaver, that works -- but I lose all the bold and italics, which is a pain
because there's a lot of definitions, emphasis, etc.

Someone mentioned pasting into HomeSite from Word, but I don't really see
that. I haven't really learned to use HomeSite at all, so maybe I'll try to
figure that out. If anyone else knows of a workaround for the problem I'm
experiencing, I'm all ears. Thanks.

Sadly, I can't offer you much.

Why not download the trial of DMX2004 and see if it behaves better for you.
They have done quite a bit of work on the DW/Word data exchange in this
version....

That someone was me. I deal with large amounts of text on my sites (lists
of words for translators and sites dedicated to writers) and ran into the
same problem.

However, it seems easier in my case, because I do not need to format my
text. I just tried it with text like you probably have to deal with, and
indeed lost all the formatting (pasted directly from Word into HomeSite,
not via Wordpad). Formatting it in HomeSite does not require much work
however, and the programme does not crash even with large amounts of texts
(at least on my machine it doesn't ).

I am afraid I cannot give you any tips.
Have you tried pasting bit by bit into DW in Code View? That also can take
a much heavier weight in my experience.

Good luck!

Hi,

Murray is right. There is a big improvement in preserving format from cutting
and pasting from MS Word. This is the reason why Dreamweaver MX 2004 takes a
while to cut/paste large Word documents. It will pre-process the content in the
Clipboard and paste the result. So yes, there is an overhead in pasting from
Word. As another suggestion, you can save the page in Word as HTML and do the
clean up in Dreamweaver. Try the Commands > Clean Up Word HTML and Commands >
Apply Source Formatting.
