Remote Site Definition

| I manage a lab that is frozen, where each time it reboots it reverts back to
it's intial state. The class is working on websites and right now they have to
redefine their site each day. I want to make sure if I ufreeze the computers
and change them, that I take care of everything at once. When a site is created
and consequently listed intially under the sites, is that just from the *.dws
file that gets created in the .../configuration/sitecache folder? Or is there
any thing else I would need to do? Is there a better way to have sites "follow"
users from computer to computer?
Thanks

suggestion- ignore the "site cache" files. They aren't important.
What you (or the students) need to use the EXPORT button in the Edit Sites
box, under the "Site" menu.
they can then store those .ste files, and use them to restore the site
definition to their site.
alternatively, if this is something you will do, backing up all the site
definitions and restoring them all- check one of these (assuming it's
windows)
http://navbars.net/nav/navbar_resources.htm
http://mm-exporter.joexx.de
If it's a macintosh, do a find for the Dreamweaver (version) Prefs file, for
the User the machine is booted up as. Then restore the prefs file after the
machine is 'wiped' and the sites will be back.
Note- all of this only restores the Site Definitions, it doesn't backup or
restore the actual site assets- those are in whatever "local site folder"
they are using.

Windows machines? If so, the site information is in the registry. Where it
is depends on the version of Dreamweaver.

| Yeah, these are 9x machines that are running DW4. I looked through the
registry, but didn't see anything. I wanted to specify where Dreamweaver would
look for it's sites. I do see how sites are set up in the registry, but didn't
know if it would create its own new dws file. The biggest problem is that even
if I script in the intial file for the iste, which does work. I need to be able
to write back to the remote folder upon exiting or else any changes are lost.
So if you know where in the registry to specify how to get DW4 to llok at a
remote loaction for the site definitions, that would be lovely.
Thanks

| again- you can ignore the .dws files. The site caches will be recreated
when that site is opened.
What may be easier and seems to make more logical sense, is to modifiy the
scripting or software that's doing this daily wiping, so that the Macromedia
entries in the Registry are preserved.
doing that change would be easier than doing daily backups and restores of
the site defs with the tools i mentioned in prev. msg.

| Well I have changed the class users logon scripts to write in the registry
values to list their site in the DW pulldown menu. And if I understand the
above mentioned posts, the site cache will create itself each time? As I do not
want to have to write anything upon exit of the program.
