Dreamweaver - Drop menu width issue

Drop menu width issue

When I create a drop menu (vertical) in Dreamweaver MX, the menu width is not
equal to the longest menu item text (plus cellpadding etc) as it should be,
but approximately the width of the longest menu item plus a third. ie roughly
4/3 as long as it should be.
This occurs in all my drop menus.
I have tried creating menus in Fireworks MX and these work on importing to DW,
but as soon as I open the 'Show Pop-up Menu' item in the
Behaviours panel and then close it again (whether any editing has been done or
not) the menu width extends by about 1/3.
Anyone know what's going on?

The HTML Dreamweaver renders in its Design mode isn't always what your
browser will render. Have you tried previewing your page in IE, Netscape,
or your browser-of-choice? This might just be "one of those things" ... in
that you may have to continually test your project in a browser to see how
it *really* looks and just live with the approximation Dreamweaver gives
you.

Of course, it could also be due to width settings in your HTML ... is
this menu inside a series of <td> tags? <div> tags? something else? Do
these HTML elements have width attributes (width="100" or some other
number)? Is the width specified at all? Maybe your menu is in a bulletted
list, and the bullets are pushing the content or container wider than you'd
like. Maybe the width is specified by CSS, but the CSS (if it's external)
is no longer being referenced?

Put this project online and let us see a URL. Someone will be much more
likely to spot the trouble. :)
