Can Word be 'called' from a browser?

| Does anyone know if you can make Word docs on a website open with the correct
application? I'm running a company intranet and all the workstations have the
same build, so I could use the address of the executable easily enough....
Thanks in advance,
Nick

| I don't think you can "make" it happen, but if you post a Word .doc file and
link to it and the user has Word it will open in Word within their browser.
So if you're sure everyone on the intranet has that, it should work for
(just about) everyone. There will always be wacky exceptions

| If you're on Windows, then I believe that linking to a Word doc will open a
Word environment within IE. I'm not sure where the intergration points are
and with what versions, though. I just remember it happening to me one day
and I thought it was kind of neat. Otherwise, I believe you can set your
web server to map the .doc extension to the appropriate MIME type for a Word
app.
Best regards,
Chris

| At the moment the docs do open in the IE version of Word, but the users don't
like that so much as it only allows limited editing capabilities, particularly
with some of our template documents.
I would've thought that you could turn off the Word plug-in in IE to force the
file to open with the full Word application but even this seems to be pretty
locked down in IE6.
Not to worry - we'll just have to educate people about the joys of "save
target as".
Thanks for the responses,
Nick
